Our
History:
Egelabra
Merino Stud today runs 40,000 sheep and 3,000 cattle on 55,000 hectres
of prime grazing
country near Warren, central New South Wales and produces over 1,600
bales of wool with an average 20.5 micron.
Over 2,500
rams are produced annually for sale and a further 100 remain with the
Stud continuing to ensure the unique genetic characteristics of the
Egelabra bloodline. Egelabra
can trace its history back to the birth of the wool industry in Australia
in 1797 with the introduction of Spanish blood Merinos by Captain Henry
Waterhouse.
Our
Managers:
Since 1906
Egelabra Merino Stud has had six General Managers, each contributing
their knowledge, skills and experience to ensure Egelabra's long-standing
and continued success as a superior closed-stud.
Cam Munro,
current Egelabra General Manager, began his career at Boonoke Merino
Stud in New South Wales where he progressed from Jackaroo to Overseer.
He commenced his involvement at Egelabra Merino Stud in 1989 as Overseer
and was promoted to Manager of the Eenaweena Ram Depot in 1993. Having
demonstrated exceptional abilities in these roles, Cam took over the
position of General Manger of Egelabra in 1997.
Our
Classers:
The role
of Classer is extremely important in stud Merino breeding. Invariably
he is a man of wide experience and definite views on the type of sheep
that will lift the flock average and give the best commercial result.
Bill Bailey
was Egelabra’s Classer until retiring in 2001 after 41 years of invaluable
service. During this time, Bill controlled the breeding of more Spanish
Merino studs and flocks than any other classer in Australia. Bill has
continued his association with Egelabra as its Stud Consultant.
In 2001
Paul Kelly, with Bill Bailey's endorsement, succeeded as the Egelabra
Stud Classer. Paul's suitability was unquestionable. During his 15 years
at Egelabra he moved up the ranks from jackaroo to manager of Eenaweena,
demonstrating the natural ability essential in a first-rate classer.
Paul's instinctive skill for judging sheep is an invaluable tool for
advancing Egelabra Merino Stud into the future.
